Westerman, Lawmakers Reintroduce Second Chance Month Resolution

WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has reintroduced a resolution designating April as Second Chance Month, aiming to raise awareness about the challenges faced by formerly incarcerated individuals and highlight efforts to reduce barriers to successful reentry into society.
U.S. Representatives Bruce Westerman (R-AR), Lucy McBath (D-GA), Don Bacon (R-NE), Danny K. Davis (D-IL), Barry Moore (R-AL), Carol Miller (R-WV), and LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), along with Senators Kevin Cramer (R-ND) and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), are leading the effort. The resolution is endorsed by multiple organizations, including Prison Fellowship, the Brennan Center for Justice, Right on Crime, CPAC, and the National District Attorneys Association.
“Recognizing April as Second Chance Month is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness about creating pathways for Americans who’ve paid their debt to society but face countless barriers when re-entering their communities,” said Rep. Westerman. He emphasized the importance of restoring dignity through employment and community reintegration.
Rep. McBath noted that Second Chance Month “highlights the importance of opening opportunities to formerly incarcerated workers and reducing obstacles to gainful employment so that we all have safer communities and a stronger workforce.”
Other lawmakers echoed the resolution’s significance. Rep. Bacon spoke to the power of forgiveness and how support programs help individuals reintegrate and reunite with their families. Rep. Davis praised the Second Chance Act for removing civil and criminal barriers that limit access to jobs, education, and government benefits.
“In Alabama, I’ve seen firsthand how hope and training for incarcerated individuals can lower recidivism rates,” said Rep. Moore. “The Lord shows us grace daily, and we should extend that same grace to those committed to rectifying their mistakes.”
Senator Cramer emphasized that while the justice system focuses heavily on punishment, “America is a nation of second chances.” Senator Klobuchar added that the resolution brings awareness to the obstacles former inmates face and promotes access to stable employment and education.
Since its launch in 2017 by Prison Fellowship, Second Chance Month has grown into a national movement with over 1,000 partners. Heather Rice-Minus, CEO of Prison Fellowship, said their mission is to unlock second chances for the 1 in 3 Americans with a criminal record who face nearly 44,000 barriers to reentry.
Kate Trammell, senior VP of advocacy and legal at Prison Fellowship, added, “Supporting second chances recognizes the God-given dignity and potential of every person.”
The resolution’s sponsors hope it will bring renewed focus to criminal justice reform and support a stronger, more inclusive workforce and safer communities.

Trump Order Deems Smackover Lithium As Critical Project

LEWISVILLE – A lithium project in Southwest Arkansas is getting national attention as part of a major push to boost American-made energy resources.
Smackover Lithium, a partnership between Standard Lithium and energy company Equinor, has been chosen as one of the first major projects supported by a new executive order from President Donald Trump. The order, announced in March, aims to speed up the production of important minerals that the U.S. needs for energy and manufacturing—especially those that usually come from countries like China.
The Southwest Arkansas (SWA) Project is the only one using a new technology called Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) to make the list. It’s also one of just three lithium projects nationwide selected for fast-track review.
That means government agencies will work together to speed up permits and approvals, making the process more transparent and predictable. The project has also earned support from the Department of Energy, which sees it as a key part of America’s energy future.
“We are honored by this recognition,” said David Park, CEO of Standard Lithium. “This project can help power America’s energy needs, create good jobs in Arkansas, and reduce our dependence on foreign minerals.”
The lithium produced by the SWA Project could be used in batteries for electric vehicles and other advanced energy technologies. Smackover Lithium says they’re committed to protecting the environment, working with the local community, and moving forward responsibly.

Pope Francis Dies At 88

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics worldwide, has died at the age of 88. His passing marks the end of a historic papacy that began in 2013, making him the first pontiff from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope. Known for his humility, progressive tone, and focus on social justice, Francis leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the global Catholic Church in significant ways.
The Vatican announced his death early Monday morning, citing complications from ongoing health issues that had increasingly limited his public appearances in recent months.
Reaction to Pope Francis’ death poured in from around the world, including from Arkansas leaders.
“Our prayers go out to Catholics in Arkansas and across the world,” said Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “Rest in peace.”
Francis visited the United States in 2015 and maintained strong diplomatic ties with countries around the globe. He was widely praised for efforts to address poverty, climate change, and the global refugee crisis, though his papacy also navigated intense scrutiny over the Church’s handling of sexual abuse scandals.
Arkansas is home to more than 130,000 Catholics, many of whom gathered for prayer services across the state Monday morning in remembrance of the pontiff. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor of the Diocese of Little Rock is expected to issue a statement and lead a memorial Mass later this week.
Funeral arrangements will be held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, with international dignitaries and religious leaders expected to attend.
