Severe weather possible on Saturday

EL DORADO – Residents in South Arkansas should be prepared for potential severe weather on Saturday, March 8, as the National Weather Service has placed the region under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms.
Forecasters say the primary concern for South Arkansas will be large hail, with stones reaching quarter size or larger. While the highest risk is expected in East Texas and North Louisiana, storms moving into South Arkansas could also bring damaging wind gusts of 60+ mph.
According to the latest forecast, storms could develop as early as late morning and continue into the evening hours. Forecasters are continuing to refine the expected timeline, and residents are urged to stay alert to changing conditions.
The potential impacts include damage to vehicles, roofs, and outdoor structures from hail, as well as isolated power outages due to strong winds. With spring storm season approaching, officials advise residents to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA weather radios, local news updates, and mobile notifications.
For the latest updates, residents can visit the National Weather Service in Shreveport at weather.gov/shv or follow their official social media channels.

Flooding Likely This Week As Heavy Rainfall Expected

EL DORADO – The National Weather Service is warning residents across the region to prepare for another round of heavy rainfall and flash flooding beginning Tuesday and continuing into Tuesday night, as a major storm system moves through already waterlogged areas.
Forecasters say the risk is significant due to saturated soil conditions left behind by recent storms. With the ground unable to absorb much more rainfall, any additional precipitation could lead to rapid runoff, increasing the potential for flash flooding across low-lying and poor drainage areas.
“Flooding concerns will only worsen,” the NWS warned, adding that rises on area lakes and rivers are also anticipated later this week and into the weekend.
Emergency officials urge residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert, avoid driving through high water, and monitor local forecasts closely. Flash floods can occur suddenly and with little warning, especially during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.
Residents are encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including NOAA Weather Radios, smartphone apps, and social media updates from trusted weather sources.

Bridge Work on Morning Star Road Delayed After Damage to Fresh Concrete

EL DORADO – A scheduled bridge repair on Morning Star Road in Union County has been delayed after a driver caused damage to freshly poured concrete, according to Union County Judge Mike Loftin.
The repair project, located just north of Legacy Lane, began Thursday with plans to reopen the roadway by Monday, May 5, weather permitting. However, those plans changed after an individual disregarded the road closure and drove through the work zone, damaging the curing concrete.
“This careless act has now pushed the reopening back, as crews will have to make additional repairs,” Judge Loftin said in a statement Friday. “We appreciate the public’s continued patience and cooperation as we work to complete this project safely.”
No new estimated completion date has been provided, though the judge’s office noted that updates will be shared as work progresses. Drivers are urged to respect road closure signs and seek alternate routes to avoid further delays or damage.
Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Union County Judge’s Office for more information.

Camden Pastor Named SAU Tech Unsung Hero For May

CAMDEN — Pastor Eddie Moore has been named SAU Tech’s Unsung Hero for the month of May, honoring his decades of service, dedication to faith, education, and community leadership in South Arkansas.
Born and raised in Camden, Moore is the second of five sons of Eddie Sr. and Ida Bea Moore. A graduate of Camden public schools, Moore’s leadership qualities emerged early, both in the classroom and on the court. As a 10th grader, he was a starting player on the Lincoln High School basketball team that won the 1969 4AA State Championship.
Following his 1971 graduation, Moore joined the United States Air Force, serving four years and achieving the rank of sergeant. During his service, he married his high school sweetheart, Erma Hutton, and the two have been devoted partners for more than 51 years. Together, they’ve raised seven adult children and are now surrounded by a growing family of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Pastor Moore has worn many hats in his lifetime: civic leader, school board member, pastor, and public servant. He worked over 30 years in maintenance at International Paper before spending two years employed at SAU Tech. His longstanding commitment to education includes more than 35 years of service on the Camden and Camden Fairview School Boards, where he also served as president.
His spiritual journey began officially in 1992 with his first sermon while attending Jackson Theological Seminary. Since then, he has led numerous congregations, including St. James AME Church in Eagle Mills, Macedonia AME in Camden, Free Hope AME in Strong, Greater Lee Chapel AME in El Dorado, and now serves as pastor at New Beginnings Family Ministries in El Dorado.
Even in retirement, Moore remains active. He regularly teaches Bible study at Silver Oaks Nursing Home twice a month, works around the home and church, and finds joy in fishing, golfing, and traveling with his wife. Through it all, he continues to serve his community with humility and faith.
When asked about his guiding principle, Pastor Moore often shares one of his favorite scriptures: Matthew 6:33 – “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
SAU Tech recognizes Pastor Eddie Moore as a true unsung hero—one whose life has been dedicated to service, leadership, and lifting others.
