Razorbacks Officially Hire New Head Coach

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Ryan Silverfield, one of the nation’s winningest coaches over the last three seasons, has been named the 35th head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Silverfield has been one of the most successful head coaches in the country since taking over the Memphis program in December 2019, going 50-25, including a pair of 10+ win seasons in 2023 and 2024, while earning bowl eligibility in all six years. With eight wins this season, Memphis has posted 29 victories over the last three seasons to be among the nation’s Top 15 programs in wins. His final Tigers team also extended the program’s streak to 12 straight bowl appearances – the longest streak among non-Power 4 programs in the nation.

“It became clear during our conversations that Coach Silverfield shares our vision of making the College Football Playoffs and competing for a national championship,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Hunter Yurachek said. “With our new and significant financial investment in the football program, we are confident we now have the coach and resources to make that happen. Throughout the search process, Coach Silverfield’s proven ability to win games over a sustained period separated him from the pack and make him the right choice to be our next head football coach. His teams at Memphis have been consistent winners since he took over the program in 2019. The knowledge of our state and region he brings along with the ability to build and maintain a program will provide a great foundation for our program moving forward. We are excited to welcome his wife, Katie, and their two daughters, Adeline and Celicia, to Arkansas.”

The 2025 Tigers featured an explosive offense once again, finishing the regular season No. 19 in the FBS averaging 34.6 points per game to mark the fourth consecutive season a Memphis team has ranked inside the Top 25 for points per game at the end of a season. All six of Silverfield’s Memphis teams have averaged 30+ points per game. The Tigers are one of just five schools nationally to rank in the Top 20 in scoring in each of the past three seasons, joining Notre Dame, Oregon, Ole Miss and Texas State.

The team’s defense has shown steady improvement over the last three seasons, allowing just 22.5 points per game this year – the best of the Silverfield era and third-best in the American Conference this season. The Tigers’ defense also ranked third in the American allowing 361.1 yards per game, a number that has improved dramatically over the last two seasons. The team’s 19 forced turnovers also helped Memphis rank 13th in the FBS in turnover margin at plus-9.

Memphis’ historic 2024 season saw the Tigers accomplish back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time in program history with an 11-2 record capped off by a Frisco Bowl win over West Virginia. The 11-win campaign was good enough to place the Tigers in the final Coaches Poll at No. 23 and the final AP poll at No. 24, the first time Memphis had finished inside the Top 25 of either poll since 2019. That Memphis team also cracked the College Football Playoff Top 25 in December at No. 25 after a win over Tulane to snap the Green Wave’s 17-game conference winning streak. The Tigers spent 10 weeks ranked or receiving votes in the AP Poll and received votes or were ranked in 14 out of 17 editions of the Coaches Poll.

Silverfield became the first Memphis head coach in history to win Tennessee Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year honors for the second time in 2023 after leading the Tigers to a 10-2 season. His squad captured just the fifth 10-win season in program history and won his school record fourth bowl game with a 36-26 win over Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

The 2022 Tigers won their second consecutive bowl game to make him the first Memphis head coach to win back-to-back bowl games.

In 2021, true freshman QB Seth Henigan earned Freshman All-America honors while leading the Tigers. He passed for 3,322 yards and 25 touchdowns to shatter the school’s freshman passing yards record and rank sixth overall on the program’s single-season list. His 25 touchdowns matched the seventh-most in school history.

His first season as the Tigers’ head coach ended with an 8-3 record during the 2020 season. Silverfield’s .727 winning percentage set the school record for winning percentage by a head coach, with the team’s eight wins matching Mike Norvell’s record for a first-year head coach. On the field, Memphis ranked 22nd in the nation in total offense (453.1) and finished 17th in the country in both passing offense (307.9) and first down offense (260). Defensively, the Tigers were 13th in turnovers gained (20), 17th in passes intercepted (12) and 19th in red zone defense (.744).

After more than 18 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and NFL levels, Silverfield joined the Memphis staff in 2016 as the team’s offensive line coach and quickly began his ascension on the Tigers’ staff earning a promotion to Run Game Coordinator in 2017 before being named Assistant Head Coach in 2018 and Deputy Head Coach in 2018.

Silverfield’s 2018 offensive line was one of 10 semifinalists for the Joe Moore Award, given to the best offensive line in college football. He was named one of six finalists for the offensive line coach of the year award sponsored by FootballScoop and has been recognized as one of the top recruiters during his time at Memphis. In 2017, he was tabbed the fourth-best recruiter in The American by 247sports.com.

Prior to Memphis, Silverfield split the 2015 season at Arizona State as a senior offensive analyst and with the NFL’s Detroit Lions as an assistant offensive line coach – his second stint coaching in the NFL. He helped a 2-7 Lions team finish 5-2 over the final two months of the season behind a revamped offensive line that allowed QB Matthew Stafford to throw 17 touchdowns with only one interception during that seven-game stretch.

In 2014, as an offensive consultant, he helped Toledo to a 9-4 mark and a 7-1 record in the Mid-America Conference to win the West division. The nine wins for the Rockets were the team’s most since 2001, capped off by a GoDaddy.com Bowl win over Arkansas State. Silverfield’s work with the offensive line helped pave the way for one of the best offenses in school history as the Rockets set school records for total offense, total rushing yardage and first downs per game while also ranking among the program’s top-five in points per game (2nd), touchdowns scored (3rd) and rushing touchdowns (3rd). The offense led the MAC in scoring offense, total offense, rushing offense and first downs with RB Kareem Hunt leading the league in rushing (1,631 yards) and leading FBS in yards per carry (8.0).

Silverfield spent six seasons with the Minnesota Vikings (2008-13) working with both the offensive and defensive lines. During his time in Minneapolis, the Vikings won a pair of NFC North Division titles with three playoff appearances, including the 2009 NFC Championship game. He worked with an offensive line that blocked for NFL MVP Adrian Peterson in 2012 as Peterson ran for a league-best 2,097 yards.

At UCF in 2006-07, he worked on both sides of the ball as a graduate assistant. His first season with the Knights was spent with the offense and his second season with a Knights’ defense that led the way to a 10-4 season and a Conference USA championship.

In 2005, Silverfield served as the quarterbacks coach at Jacksonville University. At the age of 23, he served as the head coach at Memorial Day High School in Savannah, Ga. in 2004.

He coached throughout his time during college at Hampden-Sydney College (Va.) starting as an offensive assistant in 2000 before taking over the Tigers’ defensive line in 2001-02. He helped the Tigers to a 9-1 record in 2003 as the team’s tight ends and H-backs coach during his final season. The offense led the nation with 47.0 points per game and scored 45+ points in all 10 games that season.

Silverfield began his coaching career at his alma mater – The Bolles School – in 1999. As a player at Bolles, he was a member of two state championships in 1995 and 1999, helping the Bulldogs to a No. 1 ranking in the USA Today Super 25 national high school poll.

CAMDEN — The Camden Fairview School Board approved the hiring of Jamie Carter as the next Camden Fairview Cardinal head football coach and assistant athletic director during its regular board meeting Monday night.

Carter comes to Camden Fairview from Marion, where he most recently served as associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator. He previously spent four years as head football coach and assistant athletic director at Osceola, compiling an 18–5 conference record. Carter brings 17 years of coaching experience, including two seasons as Marion’s defensive coordinator.

“I am truly honored and grateful to be named the Head Football Coach at Camden Fairview High School,” Carter said. “This is more than just a position; it’s an opportunity to serve young men, build meaningful relationships, and represent a proud community the right way.”

Carter emphasized his commitment to discipline, accountability, trust, and respect, saying those principles will serve as the foundation of the program. He added that values instilled in him by his parents—hard work, character, integrity, and treating others with respect—are the same standards he expects from his players.

The coaching search began January 9, when former head coach Nick Vaughn announced his resignation to accept the head coaching position at Maumelle. The interview committee included Assistant Athletic Director Johnny Jackson, Assistant Superintendent Andre Toney, Assistant Superintendent Cara Bowie, Human Resources Director Fred Lilly II, and Cardinal football booster club president Jamie Semple. Interviews were conducted last week before Superintendent Mrs. Armstrong met with Carter and presented her recommendation to the school board.

“Our community has always shown strong support for our students and for Cardinal athletics,” Armstrong said. “I’m confident that Coach Carter is the right leader to continue building on our proud tradition of Cardinal Football, developing our student-athletes, and moving our program forward with integrity and purpose.”

Carter is scheduled to meet with Cardinal football players on Monday, February 23, and the district will host a community meet-and-greet on Thursday, March 19. Additional details are expected to be released in the coming days.

West Side Christian Warriors and Lady Warriors Dominate at HCAA Quarter Finals in Ft. Smith

The West Side Warriors of El Dorado hosted the Regional Heartland Christian Activities Association (HCAA) Regional Basketball Tournament for boys and girls teams over Valentine’s Day weekend, where they came out on top of the tournament in dominant fashion. West Side Warriors and Lady Warriors won their games and advanced to the HCAA Quarter Finals hosted in Fort Smith, AR. It was there where they, again, showed their dominance and advanced to the Semi-Finals to be played in Oklahoma City, OK on February 20, 2026 @ The Firelake Arena. The winner of that matchup will play in the Championship, also hosted in OKC on February 21, 2026.

West Side Lady Warriors won 43-5 over the Southwest Christian Lady Lions in the Quarter Finals in Fort Smith during their 2 pm matchup. They showed a dominant effort on the boards, defense, and efficient scoring opportunities.

West Side Warriors Boys won 62-49 over the Lakewood Christian Lions in their 3:30 pm Quarter Finals matchup in Fort Smith. The Warriors showed hustle, grit, and determination to come out of this tournament the victors.

West Side Jr. High Warriors finished 2nd in the 2A HCAA State Tournament after falling to Garrett Memorial out of Hope, AR.

El Dorado Cheer Wins National Championship

ORLANDO, FL – El Dorado High School’s cheerleading team claimed a national championship on Sunday, winning the Division II title at the 2026 UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship, part of the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC), in Orlando, Florida. The Wildcats competed against top Division II programs from across the country at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, emerging as national champions on cheerleading’s biggest high school stage.

The NHSCC is the premier national competition for high school cheer teams in the United States and is organized by Varsity Spirit and the Universal Cheerleaders Association. Each year, it brings together elite programs from across the nation to compete for national titles in multiple divisions, with teams judged on execution, difficulty, synchronization, crowd leadership, and overall performance.

El Dorado advanced through preliminary rounds earlier in the weekend before taking the floor Sunday in the championship finals. The Wildcats delivered a clean, confident routine featuring strong stunting, tumbling, sharp motions, and high energy, separating themselves from a highly competitive Division II field to secure the championship.

The national title reflects months of preparation, discipline, and teamwork by the athletes and coaching staff. It also places El Dorado High School among the nation’s elite cheer programs for the 2025–26 season.

The competition was streamed nationally on Varsity TV, allowing family members, classmates, and supporters back home to watch the Wildcats’ championship performance in real time. With the Division II NHSCC title, El Dorado High School adds a significant national accomplishment to its athletic tradition and brings home a championship that will be celebrated throughout the school and community.

Hogs Roll Past Vanderbilt In Statement Win

FAYETTEVILLE — No. 20 Arkansas delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Tuesday night, dominating No. 15/14 Vanderbilt 93-68 at Bud Walton Arena.

Six Razorbacks scored in double figures as Arkansas (now 4-0 in ranked matchups this season) used balanced offense, high-efficiency passing, and stifling defense to cruise past the Commodores in their eighth all-time meeting as ranked opponents.

Trevon Brazile recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points, a season-high 14 rebounds, and added five assists, four steals, and two blocks. Darius Acuff Jr. led the scoring with 17 points and five assists — all in the second half — while Meleek Thomas added 13 points and five assists. Malique Ewin and Karter Knox each scored 16, and D.J. Wagner contributed 11 off the bench in a strong bounce-back performance.

Head coach John Calipari moved Wagner to the bench to “get him going,” and the sophomore responded with efficient play — three assists, no turnovers, and confident scoring.

Arkansas led 46-35 at the half after racing out to a 13-2 start and holding a 20-point advantage midway through the opening frame. The Hogs never looked back. They shot 54.5% from the field in the first half and out-rebounded Vandy 23-13, then torched the Commodores for 61.3% shooting in the second half while forcing cold shooting on the other end.

Vanderbilt (previously 10th nationally in scoring and 24th in field goal percentage) was held to just 68 points on 37.9% shooting. Tyler Nickel was the only Commodore in double figures with 17 — all in the first half.

Arkansas totaled 25 assists to just seven turnovers and threw down 13 dunks, including four by Ewin and three from Nick Pringle.

With the win, Arkansas improves to 32-15 all-time against Vanderbilt and 17-5 in Fayetteville. The 25-point victory marked the fourth-largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent in program history.

The Razorbacks return to action Saturday night when they host LSU at Bud Walton Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network.

Muleriders Set For In-State Road Trip

MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Southern Arkansas men’s basketball (7-9, 4-6 GAC) hits the road for a pair of key in-state matchups this week, visiting Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. before facing Henderson State on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Thursday marks the 118th meeting between SAU and UAM, with the Muleriders holding a 73-44 series lead. They’ll then square off with Henderson State for the 120th time, with the Reddies leading 64-55 all-time.

SAU looks to bounce back after a tough 69-64 home loss to Northwestern Oklahoma State. Greg Moore Jr. led the way with 22 points, his best since early December. Junior Williams added 12, and Jair Horton finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Despite the loss, the Muleriders shot a strong 46.2% from the field and 47.1% from three.

Moore continues to shine at the line, ranking second in the GAC with a 91.1% free throw percentage. As a team, SAU leads the conference in three-point shooting at 34.4%.

Thursday’s opponent, UAM (7-9, 3-7 GAC), enters on a two-game skid and sits just below SAU in the standings. Ashton Price leads the Boll Weevils with 14.6 points per game, while Isaac Jackson adds 13.7. UAM averages 66.1 points per game and shoots 45.4% from the floor.

Saturday’s opponent, Henderson State (8-8, 5-5 GAC), also comes in after back-to-back losses, including a triple-overtime battle with nationally ranked SNU. The Reddies average 76.6 points per game and are led by Zaveion Okoh (15.8 ppg) and Xavier Owens (12.9 ppg).

Both games will be streamed live on YouTube through UAM and HSU’s athletic channels, with radio coverage on KVMZ 99.1 FM. The matchups mark the start of a four-game road stretch for the Muleriders.
