Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department offering rides, assistance during winter weather

Published

on

CAMDEN – With snow and ice in the forecast for Thursday, the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department is stepping up to assist essential medical personnel who may face difficulty commuting due to hazardous road conditions.

The Sheriff’s Office announced that it will provide rides to and from work for hospital staff, nursing home employees, home health workers, and other medical professionals who are unable to safely drive themselves during the winter weather event.

Sheriff’s officials urge those needing assistance to provide a one- to two-hour advance notice to ensure timely transportation. Given the high demand for rides during similar events in previous years, the department asks for patience as deputies work to accommodate requests as quickly as possible.

“We’re committed to making sure our medical personnel can safely get to work, even when road conditions become dangerous,” the department stated. “Please plan ahead and let us know if you need assistance.”

Residents needing transportation can call the Sheriff’s Department at 870-231-5300.

The current forecast, issued by the National Weather Service, predicts a mix of snow and ice across southern Arkansas beginning Thursday, with roads expected to become slick and hazardous. Drivers are encouraged to stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

For updates on road conditions and assistance, residents are encouraged to follow the Ouachita County Sheriff’s Department’s social media channels.

State Approves First-Ever Lithium Royalty Rate for Smackover Project

Published

on

LITTLE ROCK — In a historic decision, the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission has approved the state’s first royalty rate for lithium extraction, paving the way for a major new industry in South Arkansas.

The Commission unanimously voted to set a 2.5% royalty rate for the Reynolds Unit, part of Phase I of Smackover Lithium’s South West Arkansas Project. In addition to the royalty, landowners will receive an annual fee of $65.05 per acre, making the total compensation roughly 3% based on current lithium prices.

This decision is a key step in the development of lithium production in the region and sets a precedent for future lithium brine extraction projects in Arkansas.

Smackover Lithium is a joint venture between Standard Lithium and Equinor, and the company plans to produce 22,500 tonnes of battery-quality lithium carbonate each year from the Reynolds Unit. Full commercial operations are expected to begin by 2028.

The lithium extracted will be used in electric vehicle batteries and other energy storage systems, positioning South Arkansas as a potential hub for the growing clean energy economy.
