Lynwood Cathey, Smackover

Lynwood Dean Cathey, 90 of Smackover passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at his residence. Born September 27, 1934 in Smackover, AR he was the son of Grady Hillman Cathey and Lula Mae Dunn Cathey.

Lynwood believed in his Savior Jesus Christ. He was an active member of Hickory Grove Chapel in El Dorado, Arkansas.

Basketball was Lynwood’s passion. After graduating from Smackover High School, he served two years in the U. S. Army as Medical Aidman. He enrolled in Southern State College in Magnolia, Arkansas, to play basketball and to pursue his dream of coaching. While playing basketball for Southern State College, his team won the NAIA District 17 Championship in 1957.

Lynwood’s first coaching job was head basketball coach at White Hall High School in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. He led the team to win the State Championship in 1966. He was hired as assistant basketball coach at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville and was later hired as the head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas in Monticello. A few years after leaving his collegiate career, he coached basketball at Hermitage High School. In 1983, Lynwood was hired as basketball coach and driver’s education instructor at Mt. Holly High School in Mt. Holly, Arkansas. When Mt. Holly consolidated with the Smackover Public School in 2005, Lynwood continued as assistant basketball coach and driver’s ed instructor. He retired in 2010.

Lynwood coached 46 years receiving many awards, honors and recognitions. He was inducted into the White Hall High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and into the Union County Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. His greatest reward as “Coach” was his relationships with his players.

Lynwood was preceded in death by parents and son, Charles Michael Cathey, sisters Gurlayne Cathey and Thelma Jean Redding, brother, Grady Hillman Cathey, nephew, Lewis Hillman Wray, brothers-in-law Joe Nash and Richard Nash.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Joyce Nash Cathey, his sons, Dr. Steven Lynn Cathey, and John Haltom (Mylinda), along with his daughter, Kayla Haltom Hebert (Matt). Surviving grandchildren are Michael Riley Cathey, Elizabeth Lynn Cathey, Camille Hebert, Elise Hebert, River Haltom, and Anna Haltom, sisters-in-law: Lula Mae Cathey, Jacque Ford (Danny), Camile Lenderman (Don), Darlene Nash, Janie Held, brothers-in-law: Charles Nash (Joyce), Danny Nash (Betsy), and Dewayne Nash (JoAnn). Surviving nieces: Susan Wray, Becky Wray Futrell (Dwight), Kelley Cathey Smith (Tommy) and nephew: Mark Ray Cathey. Also surviving are numerous step-nieces and step-nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation will be at Young’s Funeral Directors Chapel in El Dorado, Arkansas on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until service time of 11:00 a.m. with his pastor Truett West officiating. Interment will follow in the Smackover Cemetery in Smackover, Arkansas under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.

The family extends loving appreciation to his church family, friends, Karen Everett-APN, Debra Jones, Dohnna Williams, and his LifeTouch Arkansas Hospice care team.

Dorothy “Dot” Howse, El Dorado

Dorothy “Dot” Ann Howse, age 81, passed from this life Sunday, January 12, 2025 at Courtyard Rehabilitation Center surrounded by family. Dot was born June 16, 1943 in El Dorado, AR to the late Clarence B. and Lillie Lou Dison.

Dot was a nurse for over five decades, serving her longest tenure at Oakridge Nursing Center where she touched many lives. She owned and operated Dots Café at the old truck stop, where she cooked some of her favorites like hot-water cornbread and beef-tips and rice. Dot’s story is unique, at one point she even drove an 18-wheeler across country. She loved music, although she was not classically trained, she could play anything by ear. Later, she became dedicated to travel and follow her son as he sang. One of her passions was shopping, she especially loved shopping at Shelly’s Shoes. She leaves behind a great legacy and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister Deana Marie Dison.

Those left to cherish her memory include: her loving husband of forty-two years Robert “Buddy” Howse, four children Keith Owens and his wife Shelly, Tracye Howse, Cheri Howse, Karen Wolfe and her husband Bill; six grandchildren Bobby Jones, Blake Jones, Matthew Wolfe, Jonathon Hopper, Rachel Tribble, Bradley Summerville and his wife Harleigh, Benjamin Summerville; seven great-grandchildren Blaze, McKenzey, Kylin, Emma, Britni, Brandi, and Jackson, four great great-grandchildren; one sister Mary Lou Burroughs; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Funeral services in her honor will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, January 16, 2025, at Perry’s Funeral Chapel in El Dorado, AR, Tyler Williams officiating, internment following at Smyrna Cemetery in Faircrest Community. A time of visitation will be held from 5-7:00 PM Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at the funeral home.

Harvey Wilson, Crossett

Harvey “Dalbo” Dale Wilson, age 62,of Crossett Arkansas, passed from this life Saturday, January 11, 2025. Harvey was born October 4, 1962 in Aspermont, TX to the late Shirley and Buddy Wilson.

He was an avid fisherman, when he said he caught a big fish, he was not just telling a fish story. He loved spending time with his friends, drinking, playing music and working on his old Ford truck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson Delos Byrd II, and one brother Lewis Churchwell.

Those left to cherish his memory include: one son Robert Wilson and his wife Amber of Trinidad, Colorado; one daughter Lacey Wilson of Odessa, TX; six grandchildren Sierra Hayes, Promise Floyd, Rogue Perkins, Texas Clark, Robert Wilson II, Joanne Byrd; one great-grandchild Maya Clark; three sisters Tammy Thomason and her husband Albert, Juanita Meyers and her husband Charles, and Tiny Wilson and Silvia; two brothers James Churchwell, and Donnie Wilson and his wife Becky; as well as a host of extended family and friends.

Sharon Johnson, El Dorado

Sharon Johnson, age 75, of El Dorado, Arkansas, passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2025. She was born in El Dorado, Arkansas to Woodrow F. Miller and Patricia Johnston Miller on June 14, 1949.

She attended school in El Dorado and Norphlet. After her graduation from Norphlet High School in 1967, she attended college for one year and Oilbelt Vocational School secretarial class. After being employed at

several places, she finally got a job at Shackleford, Shackleford, and Phillips law firm which she enjoyed as a legal secretary for over 40 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Charles Johnson to whom she was married 55 years, and by her son Michael Johnson of El Dorado, her brother Wayne Miller (Phyllis), her brother Roger Miller (Audree) of Sherwood, her mother-in-law Vernell Johnson, her sister-in-law Sherry Blann, her nephew, Marc Alexander (Angela), her nephew Phillip Miller (Katrina), and her loving niece, Donna Miller Farish (Dan), and numerous cousins and other relatives.

She enjoyed her family, researching family history, working cryptoquotes, cooking, traveling with her mother, and taking notes, but her ultimate love was for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, her church, and teaching a Sunday School Class.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 20, 2025 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Upchurch officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Urbana Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
