Hogs hold off Horns in 78-70 win

AUSTIN – Arkansas used a 15-0 run spanning the end of the first half and start of the second to turn a six-point lead into a 21-point cushion. Despite a late push by Texas, the Razorbacks held on to win 78-70 in a thrilling contest. Arkansas had built a 45-24 lead before Texas responded with a 12-0 run to close the gap to 58-49. Arkansas answered with key plays, including clutch free throws and a steal by Johnell Davis in the final moments to secure the victory.
After Arkansas pushed its lead to 21, Texas fought back, narrowing the deficit to six points late in the game. Johnell Davis’s 3-pointer with 3:20 left extended the Razorbacks’ lead, and despite Texas trimming the gap to five with a 3-pointer, Arkansas answered with two made free throws by Karter Knox and a late steal by Davis. D.J. Wagner added two free throws to seal the win.
Davis had a standout performance, scoring a season-high 24 points while adding four steals. Zvonimir Ivisic contributed with a career-high 12 rebounds and four blocks. Adou Thiero, playing through illness, added 14 points, with all of his field goals being dunks. Wagner finished with 13 points, contributing in multiple ways throughout the game.
Texas was led by Tre Johnson, who finished with 25 points in the loss. Despite the Longhorns’ effort, including a 46-point second half, they could not overcome the Razorbacks’ strong start and timely plays down the stretch.
In the first half, Arkansas led 35-24 at the break. The Razorbacks took control early with a 6-0 run after the score was tied 6-6 and built their largest lead of 13 points before the Longhorns cut it to six. Arkansas, however, used its free-throw shooting to extend the lead to 35-24 by halftime, while Texas went scoreless over the final 2:32 of the first half.
The second half saw Arkansas quickly extend its lead with an 8-0 run. Davis scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half, hitting 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Although Texas made some runs, Arkansas continued to hit key shots and make clutch free throws to maintain the advantage.
Arkansas improves to 33-15 in the all-time series against Texas, winning for the 33rd time in their last 48 meetings. The Razorbacks return home to host #3 Alabama on Saturday, Feb. 8, with the game’s start time moved to 7:30 pm (CT).

Hogs Drop First Home Weekend Series Since 2022

FAYETTEVILLE – No. 2 Arkansas (34-7, 13-5 SEC) split Friday’s doubleheader against Texas A&M (23-16, 8-10 SEC) at Baum-Walker Stadium, winning the opener 11-5 before falling 9-2 in the nightcap. The loss marked the Razorbacks’ first SEC home weekend series defeat since 2022, ending a streak of 12 straight home series wins.
In the first game, Arkansas rode strong relief pitching and a powerful offensive showing to even the series. Ben Bybee and Gabe Gaeckle combined for 8.2 innings of two-run ball and 12 strikeouts. Gaeckle, making his first relief appearance of the season, picked up the win, improving to 3-1.
The Razorback offense exploded for 11 runs, led by Wehiwa Aloy and Kuhio Aloy, who combined for six hits and three RBI. Justin Thomas Jr. recorded his first career multi-homer game, driving in three runs, while Brent Iredale also tallied three RBI. Aloy’s solo homer in the third was his fourth in as many games and his team-leading 15th of the year.
In the nightcap, Texas A&M pulled away late with a pair of three-run innings to win the rubber match. Jace LaViolette homered twice, scoring four runs and driving in three to lead the Aggies.
Landon Beidelschies gave Arkansas four solid innings on short rest, allowing one run and striking out four. But the Razorback bullpen gave up eight runs after his exit. Despite multi-hit games from Charles Davalan, Wehiwa Aloy, Brent Iredale and Ryder Helfrick, Arkansas left 10 runners stranded and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Arkansas, which had swept its SEC home series in both 2023 and 2024, now turns its attention to a two-game midweek set against in-state opponent Little Rock on April 22-23. First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.

The Razorbacks established a narrow lead by halftime, going into the break ahead 35-32. Arkansas maintained their momentum in the second half, outscoring St. John’s 40-34 to secure the victory.
D.J. Wagner led the Razorbacks with 18 points, showcasing his offensive prowess. Johnell Davis contributed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, providing a strong presence on both ends of the court. For St. John’s, RJ Luis Jr., the Big East Player of the Year, struggled offensively, shooting 3-for-17 from the field and finishing with nine points. His shooting woes significantly impacted the Red Storm’s offensive rhythm.
The game was marred by contentious officiating, with several questionable foul calls affecting both teams. CBS analyst Steve Lappas criticized the referees for their frequent whistles, particularly highlighting fouls against St. John’s Kadary Richmond and Zuby Ejiofor, as well as Arkansas’ Zvonimir Ivisic, all of whom fouled out during the game.
With this victory, Arkansas advances to the Sweet Sixteen, continuing their impressive tournament run. The Hogs will play either Texas Tech or Drake in San Francisco on Thursday.

BASKETBALL: Oral Roberts’ Kelsi Musick Named Head Women’s Coach At Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE – The University of Arkansas has hired Kelsi Musick as the 10th head coach of the Razorbacks’ women’s basketball program. Musick has signed a five-year contract through April 30, 2030, with a salary of $600,000 per year.
Musick arrives in Fayetteville after three successful seasons at Oral Roberts, where she led the Golden Eagles to back-to-back 20-win seasons and consecutive postseason appearances. ORU finished the 2023-24 season 24-9, marking its best season since 1982-83. Her teams defeated multiple SEC and AAC opponents while ranking in the Top 20 nationally in scoring each year.
Known for her fast-paced, dribble-drive offense, Musick has developed elite talent, including Summit League Freshman of the Year Emily Robinson, Newcomer of the Year Taleyah Jones, and two-time Sixth Woman of the Year Jalei Oglesby.
Arkansas Athletics Director Hunter Yurachek praised Musick’s work ethic, enthusiasm, and program-building ability. “She has a proven track record of success and is a rising star in women’s basketball,” Yurachek said.
Musick expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “Arkansas has a proud tradition, passionate fans, and a commitment to excellence,” she said. “I can’t wait to pour into our student-athletes, compete in the SEC, and build something special.”
Before Oral Roberts, Musick spent 13 seasons at NCAA Division II Southwestern Oklahoma State, leading the program to seven NCAA Tournament appearances and the 2019 national championship game. She amassed a 259-125 record and earned GAC Coach of the Year honors five times. Her teams consistently ranked in the Top 10 nationally in scoring offense, and she coached three-time All-American Makyra Tramble.
Musick began her coaching career at Fresno State, serving as Director of Basketball Operations before coaching at her alma mater, Canton (Okla.) High School. She later returned to Fresno State as an assistant, helping the Bulldogs to two 20-win seasons and an NCAA Tournament berth.
As a player, Musick starred at Cameron University, setting records in three-point shooting and assists while leading her team to its first NCAA Tournament. She was inducted into the Cameron Athletics Hall of Fame in 2025.
Musick and her husband, Josh, have three children: Maddox, Titus, and Amaria.
