HAPPENING NOW: ANOTHER Accident on Highway 82

Published

on

COLUMBIA COUNTY, AR – Less than 24 hours after an auto accident claimed the life of a Magnolia man, another accident has happened on the same highway. Approximately five miles east of Magnolia, an empty truck and trailer left the highway and came to rest in the woods. Magnolia Fire Chief Jacob Talley says the cause of the accident is unknown but did make note of scattered thunderstorms in the area. Emergency crews are on the scene and their caution level is high because of utilities in the immediate vicinity, some of which include the highly flammable Hydrogen Sulfide. Talley said there was no immediate threat to the community or the workers but caution was being exercised all the same. Reports at the scene say the truck was Eastbound on 82 when it left the roadway. The truck is deemed non-hazardous and is empty of material but is rated for Level 9 Hazardous Materials, namely Hot Asphalt. Also reports at the scene say the driver, who was the lone occupant, suffered only minor injuries. The accident is currently being investigated by Arkansas State Police.

Very dry conditions raise wildfire concerns across South Arkansas

Published

on

EL DORADO, Ark. — A growing wildfire threat is developing across South Arkansas and the surrounding Four State Region as hot temperatures and a prolonged lack of rainfall continue to dry out vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, much of the region has received less than a quarter-inch of rainfall over the past two weeks, leading to the development of flash drought conditions across much of the area.

Meteorologists say the combination of dry weather, intense summer heat and low soil moisture is increasing the potential for wildfires, particularly in areas that have seen little to no recent rainfall.

While eastern portions of the Four State Region have received more precipitation, much of South Arkansas, East Texas and northern Louisiana remain significantly drier than normal.

The National Weather Service says the elevated wildfire threat means outdoor burning should be approached with extreme caution, as fires can spread more rapidly under these conditions.

The warning comes as firefighters across the region continue responding to vegetation fires during the peak of summer. Officials are reminding residents to avoid activities that could accidentally spark a wildfire, including improperly discarded cigarettes, unattended campfires and equipment that produces sparks.

With little widespread rainfall expected in the immediate future, forecasters say the wildfire risk is likely to remain elevated until more substantial precipitation returns to the region.
