Former Murphy Oil Chairman and South Arkansas Attorney, William C. Nolan, Jr. Admitted to Broadcasters Hall of Fame

LITTLE ROCK – The Arkansas Broadcasters Association, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to promote and protect a favorable economic and regulatory climate for broadcasting, and to educate members and the public about the opportunities available through the efforts of free, over-the-air broadcast operations, announced nominations are open for the 2025 Class of Hall of Fame Broadcasters. In that announcement, the ABA said that all previous Broadcast Pioneer Award recipients had automatically been added to the roster of the Hall of Fame.
That list includes the former Chairman of the Board from Murphy Oil Corporation, local attorney and President of Noalmark Broadcasting, William C. “Bill” Nolan, Jr. who was given the award posthumously in 2012, a few short months after his death in March of that same year. Nolan graduated from El Dorado High School, then from Yale University in 1961 and received his Juris Doctorate from the same in 1964. At the time of his passing, he had announced he would retire as Chairman of the Board of Murphy Oil Corporation, having served in that capacity since 2002 and having been a director since 1977.
As President of Noalmark Broadcasting, he and his law partner, Edwin B. Alderson, Jr. purchased radio station KELD in 1970 and expanded that into almost 30 radio stations in three states over the next 40+ years. Besides the home base in El Dorado, those markets included Fayetteville, Arkansas; Hot Springs, Arkansas; Malvern, Arkansas; Arkadelphia, Arkansas; Magnolia, Arkansas; Longview, Texas; Midland, Texas; Hobbs, New Mexico and Roswell, New Mexico.
Mr. Nolan also had a true passion for health care, where many of his accomplishments are still recognized today. He served for many years on the Board of Directors of the American Hospital Association, Warner Brown Hospital, Medical Center of South Arkansas, the SHARE Foundation, and South Arkansas Regional Health Center. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Arkansas Hospital Association in 1986. He also served on the boards of South Arkansas Arts Center, Boys and Girls Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Bill was elected to the Arkansas Constitutional Convention in 1969 and served as a legislative assistant to David Pryor when he was governor of Arkansas. He also served on the boards of First Commercial Corp, Arkansas Power and Light, First Financial Bank, among others. He was a partner and general counsel of Munoco Company.
His admission into the Arkansas Broadcasters Hall of Fame marks a long line of South Arkansas Broadcasters upon whom the honor has been bestowed. Some of those include W.N. McKinney of El Dorado (1967), Julian Haas of Crossett (1969), J.A. “Sonny” West, Jr. of El Dorado (1978), and Weldon Sledge of Warren (1986).

Pope Francis Dies At 88

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the spiritual leader of more than a billion Catholics worldwide, has died at the age of 88. His passing marks the end of a historic papacy that began in 2013, making him the first pontiff from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope. Known for his humility, progressive tone, and focus on social justice, Francis leaves behind a legacy that reshaped the global Catholic Church in significant ways.
The Vatican announced his death early Monday morning, citing complications from ongoing health issues that had increasingly limited his public appearances in recent months.
Reaction to Pope Francis’ death poured in from around the world, including from Arkansas leaders.
“Our prayers go out to Catholics in Arkansas and across the world,” said Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. “Rest in peace.”
Francis visited the United States in 2015 and maintained strong diplomatic ties with countries around the globe. He was widely praised for efforts to address poverty, climate change, and the global refugee crisis, though his papacy also navigated intense scrutiny over the Church’s handling of sexual abuse scandals.
Arkansas is home to more than 130,000 Catholics, many of whom gathered for prayer services across the state Monday morning in remembrance of the pontiff. Bishop Anthony B. Taylor of the Diocese of Little Rock is expected to issue a statement and lead a memorial Mass later this week.
Funeral arrangements will be held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, with international dignitaries and religious leaders expected to attend.
