Flags to fly at half mast in memory of former governor

Published

on

LITTLE ROCK – A celebration of life for former Arkansas Governor Jim Guy Tucker will be held at 2 p.m. on February 24 at Second Presbyterian Church, located at 600 Pleasant Valley Drive in Little Rock. Following the service, Tucker will be laid to rest at Mount Holly Cemetery in Little Rock.

To honor his legacy, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has ordered flags across Arkansas to be flown at half-mast. Additionally, Tucker’s body will lie in state at the Arkansas State Capitol, allowing the public to pay their respects to the longtime public servant.

Jim Guy Tucker’s lineage is deeply rooted in El Dorado and Union County, Arkansas. His grandfather, Guy Beckwith Tucker, was born in El Dorado in 1870 and served as the city’s marshal before relocating to Little Rock. His father, James Guy Tucker Sr., was also born in El Dorado in 1894 and later managed the Arkansas District of the Social Security System for two decades. This strong familial connection to the region profoundly influenced Tucker’s upbringing and values.

Born on June 13, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Tucker moved to Arkansas during his early childhood. He attended public schools in Little Rock and graduated from Hall High School in 1961. Demonstrating academic excellence, he earned a bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard University in 1964. His early career was marked by service in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and as a civilian war correspondent in Vietnam, experiences that showcased his commitment to public service and provided him with a global perspective.

Tucker’s political journey began in 1970 when he was elected prosecuting attorney for Arkansas’s Sixth Judicial District. He subsequently served as the state’s attorney general from 1973 to 1977 and represented Arkansas’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1977 to 1979. In 1992, following Bill Clinton’s election to the presidency, Tucker ascended to the governorship of Arkansas. During his tenure, he focused on economic development, education reform, and infrastructure improvements, aiming to enhance the quality of life for Arkansans.

However, Tucker’s career faced significant challenges during the Whitewater investigation, leading to his conviction for fraud and subsequent resignation from the governorship in 1996. Despite these setbacks, he remained active in public life and continued to contribute to his community. Tucker passed away on February 13, 2025, at the age of 81, leaving behind a complex legacy intertwined with the rich history of El Dorado and Union County.

CBC President Dr. Jeremy Langley

CONWAY — Dr. Jeremy Langley has been appointed as the next president of Central Baptist College, the institution’s Board of Trustees announced last week. Langley assumed the role on May 27, becoming the tenth president in the college’s 73-year history.

Langley brings more than two decades of combined experience in higher education, ministry, and leadership to the position. He has served as CBC’s executive vice president since August 2024. Before arriving in Conway, he spent more than a decade as the associate pastor of Brister Baptist Church in Emerson and seven years in various roles at Southern Arkansas University, including assistant to the president, associate director of athletics, and assistant director of development.

“Speaking for the entire CBC board, we are thrilled to name Dr. Jeremy Langley as the new President of Central Baptist College,” said Kirk Shelton, Board Chairman. “Our search began over a year ago with the announcement of President Kimbrow’s planned retirement this year. We believe that God brought Dr. Langley to us, and as one board member said, ‘he checked all the boxes and exceeded our expectations.’ Dr. Langley hit the ground running working alongside President Kimbrow last fall and has developed a great relationship with administration, faculty, and staff. I believe he is the right man in the right place at the right time.”

Langley holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in Ministry Leadership from Liberty University, a Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology from the Baptist Missionary Association Theological Seminary, a Master of Public Administration from Southern Arkansas University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Mass Communications from Ouachita Baptist University. He formerly served as a Justice of the Peace on the Columbia County Quorum Court, where he chaired the Court’s finance committee.

“I am honored to accept the call to serve as president of Central Baptist College,” Langley said. “This institution has a rich legacy of preparing students for lives of service grounded in biblical truth. I look forward to building on that legacy and leading the college into a season of growth and impact. My chief goal is to ensure CBC continues to be a place where Christ is exalted and God is glorified.”

Langley succeeds Terry Kimbrow, who retired May 26 after more than 20 years as president.

Founded in 1952 and affiliated with the Baptist Missionary Association of Arkansas, Central Baptist College is committed to transforming lives through education that integrates Christian faith and academic excellence in a Christ-centered environment.
