Benton legislator to run for Secretary of State

Published

on

BENTON – State Sen. Kim Hammer, a Republican from Benton, announced on Monday, January 6, that he plans to run for Arkansas Secretary of State in 2026. Hammer has represented District 16 in the State Senate since 2019 and previously served in the Arkansas House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018.

Hammer expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to serve the people of Arkansas, saying, “Serving as a legislator has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I would be honored to serve Arkansans as their Secretary of State. If elected, I will leverage my legislative experience and collaborate with both the legislative and executive branches to benefit all Arkansans.”

The Secretary of State’s office is responsible for overseeing state elections, maintaining the grounds and facilities of the Arkansas State Capitol, and managing business and commercial services, including processing corporate filings, notary public certifications, and trademarks.

Following the appointment of Cole Jester by Gov. Sarah Sanders to complete the term of Secretary of State held by John Thurston, who is now serving as Treasurer, Jester is not eligible to run in 2026. As of now, no other candidates have declared their intentions to run for the position.

Throughout his tenure in the legislature, Hammer has been an advocate for election reforms. He emphasized that, as Secretary of State, he would continue working closely with county clerks and election commissioners statewide to ensure Arkansas elections remain secure and trustworthy. He also pointed to his strong pro-business record, promising to reduce government bureaucracy and streamline processes for Arkansas residents and businesses.

“I am committed to preserving the integrity and beauty of Arkansas’ Capitol grounds,” Hammer stated, referring to the state’s iconic Capitol grounds, which he considers one of the most distinguished in the nation.

Currently, Hammer represents Senate District 16, which covers parts of Saline and southwestern Pulaski counties. He chairs the Senate Efficiency Committee and serves on several other key legislative committees, including Revenue and Taxation, State Agencies and Governmental Affairs, Joint Retirement and Social Security, Joint Budget, Legislative Council, Legislative Joint Auditing, and Legislative Facilities.

Hammer, who is also a pastor at Saline Missionary Baptist Church in Tull, has been involved in ministry since 1978. He and his wife, Karen, have three children: two sons and a daughter.
