National Guard Salutes South Arkansas With Flyover Today

Published

on

EL DORADO — Residents across South Arkansas are encouraged to look to the skies Tuesday as the Arkansas National Guard’s “Fly Over Arkansas” mission makes its way across the region in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.

According to the flight schedule released by the Arkansas National Guard, the aircraft is expected to fly over several South Arkansas communities between 11 a.m. and noon Tuesday, June 30. The route includes Lake Village, Hamburg, Crossett, Warren, Fordyce, Camden, Magnolia, Hampton and El Dorado.

The statewide flyover began Monday in western and southwest Arkansas and continues through Thursday, with military aircraft passing over communities in every region of the state.

The event is part of Arkansas’ participation in the nationwide celebration leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. The Arkansas National Guard says the flyovers are designed to honor the nation’s history while recognizing the service and sacrifice of military members, veterans and their families. The mission also gives Arkansans an opportunity to see one of the Guard’s aircraft in flight without traveling to an air show or military installation.

Residents in South Arkansas are encouraged to step outside around the scheduled flyover window, though officials note flight times are approximate and may change because of weather, air traffic or operational requirements.

Following its South Arkansas route Tuesday, the aircraft will continue across the Arkansas River Valley, the Ozarks, north-central Arkansas and northeast Arkansas through Wednesday and Thursday before concluding the statewide tour.

The Arkansas National Guard is encouraging residents to share photos and videos of the flyover on social media using #FlyOverArkansas as communities across the state take part in the historic celebration.

SAU On The Square Finds Success With Experiential Learning Lab

Published

on

The David F. Rankin College of Business has partnered with SAU on the Square to launch the Experiential Learning Laboratory, a hands-on program where students from every discipline can apply classroom knowledge, test ideas, and engage with the community. The lab is led by Janell Reeves, who assumed the role of Retail Manager and Education Coordinator in September 2025.

“SAU on the Square will reinforce SAU’s commitment to preparing students for their careers while also serving as a hub for creativity, innovation, and collaboration,” said Provost Dr. Robin Sronce.

Located at 113 North Jefferson, West Court Square in downtown Magnolia, SAU on the Square has been a premier outlet for Mulerider merchandise and rental space for events, showcasing student products and providing opportunities for student employment. The lab component introduces a partnership between students and the community, providing opportunities where participants earn college credit and build their resumes.

The Experiential Learning Laboratory kicked off in January and is already producing results. Senior business student Brenden Robnett of Benton, AR, has spent the first weeks of the Spring term interviewing several business owners on Magnolia’s town square about Blossom Festival foot traffic and will present his findings, titled “Strategies to Convert Festival Attendees into Retail Customers,” to the Magnolia Downtown Merchants during their spring meeting.

“This feels more like a job than a class,” Robnett said of the program’s structure. “I prefer getting out of the classroom and learning hands-on.”

Reeves has worked across disciplines and with community businesses to design projects that match students’ skills to current challenges so that more students like Robnett have the opportunity to acquire real-world experience. From piloting advertising technologies to conducting SEO audits and delivering professional workshops to local business owners, Reeves has developed 14 unique projects. With four projects currently underway, Reeves anticipates an impactful launch.

“The lab is about putting classroom knowledge to work on real projects that make a difference for students and the community,” Reeves said.

A former Director of the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center and former small business owner herself, Reeves holds both her BBA and MBA from the Rankin College of Business at SAU.

Region Braces For Extreme Heat Heading Into Holiday Weekend

Published

on

EL DORADO — A prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather is expected to settle over South Arkansas beginning this weekend and continue well into next week, prompting safety warnings from the El Dorado Fire Department and the National Weather Service.

Afternoon high temperatures are forecast to range from 94 to 97 degrees, but humidity will make it feel even hotter. Heat index values are expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees or higher, creating an increased risk of heat-related illnesses, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.

Officials urge residents to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The El Dorado Fire Department recommends drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty. Residents should also limit outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., when temperatures and humidity are expected to peak. Anyone who must work outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned environment.

Lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can help reduce heat stress, and a wide-brimmed hat is recommended when spending time outdoors.

Fire officials are also reminding the public never to leave children, older adults or pets inside a parked vehicle. Interior vehicle temperatures can become deadly within minutes, even with the windows cracked.

Residents are encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, young children and people with chronic medical conditions, who are at greater risk for heat-related illness. Pet owners should ensure animals have plenty of fresh water and shade, and walk dogs during the early morning or after sunset to avoid scorching pavement.

Officials say it’s important to recognize the signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache and cool, clammy skin. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and can cause a high body temperature, confusion, hot, dry skin, seizures or unconsciousness. Anyone suspected of suffering heat stroke should receive immediate medical attention by calling 911.

The El Dorado Fire Department said a little preparation can go a long way toward preventing a tragedy, encouraging residents to stay hydrated, stay cool and look out for one another.
