El Dorado’s Jennifer Michaels Named Orchestra Director Of The Year

EL DORADO – Jennifer Michaels, longtime music educator and Director of Orchestras for the El Dorado School District, has been named Orchestra Director of the Year by the Arkansas Chapter of the American String Teachers Association (ASTA).
This distinguished award is one of the highest honors in the state for string educators and is given based on peer nominations and a statewide vote by ASTA members. Michaels was praised for her tireless dedication to music education, her impactful leadership within ASTA, and her commitment to growing orchestra programs across Arkansas.
A veteran of 16 years in the classroom, Michaels has taught a wide range of music courses at El Dorado Schools, including string orchestra, choir, general music, and music theory. Her students describe her as energetic, supportive, and inspiring—qualities that have made her a beloved figure both inside and outside the classroom.
In addition to her teaching, Michaels is an active performer with the El Dorado Chorale and the Southwest Chamber Singers. Outside of music, she enjoys camping, motorcycle riding with her husband, and spending time with her “fur babies.” A proud South Louisiana native, she also brings her Cajun heritage into her classroom, sometimes even speaking Cajun French with her students.
During Music in Our Schools Month, Michaels reflected on her passion for teaching: “I love being able to make music with the absolute best students on this planet every single day. They make me smile and challenge me each day in class.”
The El Dorado School District expressed pride in Michaels’ achievement, stating, “We are so proud of you and grateful for your dedication to music education and the students of El Dorado!”

Trump Order Deems Smackover Lithium As Critical Project

LEWISVILLE – A lithium project in Southwest Arkansas is getting national attention as part of a major push to boost American-made energy resources.
Smackover Lithium, a partnership between Standard Lithium and energy company Equinor, has been chosen as one of the first major projects supported by a new executive order from President Donald Trump. The order, announced in March, aims to speed up the production of important minerals that the U.S. needs for energy and manufacturing—especially those that usually come from countries like China.
The Southwest Arkansas (SWA) Project is the only one using a new technology called Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) to make the list. It’s also one of just three lithium projects nationwide selected for fast-track review.
That means government agencies will work together to speed up permits and approvals, making the process more transparent and predictable. The project has also earned support from the Department of Energy, which sees it as a key part of America’s energy future.
“We are honored by this recognition,” said David Park, CEO of Standard Lithium. “This project can help power America’s energy needs, create good jobs in Arkansas, and reduce our dependence on foreign minerals.”
The lithium produced by the SWA Project could be used in batteries for electric vehicles and other advanced energy technologies. Smackover Lithium says they’re committed to protecting the environment, working with the local community, and moving forward responsibly.
